EDITORIAL ::: Saving Nigeria from Illiteracy
 

According to the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), about 10 million Nigerian children who are of school age are neither in primary nor in secondary schools, while 51 million adults are illiterate. The agency observed that these 10 million children could not enroll in any school because their parents are illiterates, who had no opportunity to go to school.
This report, revealing as it is, comes as a wake-up call for all tiers of government to take the issue of education more seriously. Though various tiers of government have been making efforts to improve on school enrolment, this report clearly indicates that a lot still needs to be done. It is unacceptable for 10 million children who are supposed to be in school to be roaming the streets hawking, begging or doing other menial jobs that will not in any way contribute to their mental or physical development.
